About this building

The monastery was founded in 1158, although the present buildings date from 1858. Its katholikon or main church is known as "Varovitets" (Lime Monastery) because of the material from which its church is built.

Legend has it that its origins are linked to Ivan Rilski, the first Bulgarian hermit who lived in a nearby cave before retiring to the Rila monastery to lead a solitary life.
