Fardhem Church
Fardhem Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.
About this building
It is one of the most well-preserved Romanesque churches on Gotland. The chancel, apse and nave were built in the 12th century, while the tower was erected in the 13th century.
The entrance to the chancel is decorated with unique 12th-century reliefs, found nowhere else on Gotland. It is difficult to interpret what these primitive reliefs represent.
Only the foot of the 12th-century baptismal font has survived. Fragments of 14th-century wall paintings were found during restoration work in the 1950s.
