Augsburg Cathedral

Augsburg Cathedral

Augsburg, DE

Augsburg Cathedral was built in the 11th century in Romanesque style, with Gothic additions in the 14th century. Romanesque construction began in 1043 and was completed in 1065. The two towers, visible from all over the city, were completed in 1075. Many Gothic architectural elements, such as the choir, were added between 1331 and 1431. During the Protestant Reformation, the cathedral lost a good part of its works, some of which were restored. The interior, which had been laid out in Baroque style in the 17th century, regained its medieval appearance in the 19th century with neo-Gothic elements.

Augustijnenkerk

Dordrecht, NL

The Augustinian church was built in 1293 at the existing Augustinian monastery. Around 1450 it was decided to expand the monastery church with a second nave. There is no tower at the church. The Augustinians were not allowed to do that, because it did not fit in with their mendicant order. When the monks became very wealthy, probably due to considerable income from burials in the church, they tried to build a tower anyway. The bishop of Cologne had the tower under construction demolished afterwards. When the city of Dordrecht was transferred to Prince William of Orange in 1572, the Augustinian church was also officially put into use as a house of worship for Protestant worship. A majority of the population of Dordrecht turned their backs on the Roman Catholic Church. This was partly as a result of the reformed preaching of the prior Hendrik van Sutphen from Wittemberg in Germany. He became prior in the Augustinian monastery in 1515. He was later killed by the Inquisition. The pulpit from 1490 in the church is the oldest piece of furniture in Dordrecht. On the underside of the pulpit is a wood carving: a pelican pecking at its chest to feed its young with blood. The pulpit hung from 1490 to 1597 in a transept of the Grote Kerk. After that, the pulpit was moved to the Augustijnerkerk.

Aunt Old Church

Aunt Old Church

Bømlo, NO

Aunt Old Church is a stone church from the first half of the 12th century. The church is relatively small and has vessels with a longer and narrower chancel in the east. In 1874, a new church was built on the site and the old Moster church was to be demolished, but the Society for the Preservation of Ancient Norwegian Monuments bought the church, and with the help of the architect Peter Blix, the church was restored in 1896. A porch was built in front of the west portal and the sacristy in front of the choir portal was demolished. At the same time, the old tiled roof was replaced by a slate roof.
