The cathedral of Stavanger is the oldest church in Norway and the seat of the bishop of Stavanger. It is speculated that the church was first constructed in 1150, and has gone through several renovations during its lifetime.

The mosque is centrally located in the village. The present mosque dates from 1937, replacing a previous mosque on the same site, and was built largely from the stones of the old mosque.

Stavsjø church is a long church built in 1880 according to Nordan's drawings for Helgøya church. The builder of both churches was Ole Stensrud. The church in Stavsjø replaced the church in Baldishol from 1613, which was demolished in 1878.

The Staðarhólskirkja of Saurbæ in Dälum was dedicated on December 3, 1899. The oldest record of a church in Saurbe is from about 1200.

The Stedje church, which was inaugurated in 1867, was prefabricated in Christiania and then transported and installed in Stedje. The church is characterised by neo-gothic forms and the inspiration of the stave churches. It was built according to the designs of Chr. Christie.

This church has been modified heavily over the years. Once upon a time there was a triforium, a 'gallery' high in the church, which ran in front of the windows, and it was an impressive late Roman cruciform church. Of this, only the heavily modified vessel from around 1275 remains. After a major fire in 1586 the cross was demolished, the church was lowered over 5 meters and the choir was added.

The St. Stephen's Church is one of the few churches where the late Gothic rood screen (1560) remained intact. Another special feature is a 12th century sarcophagus cover depicting two people.
