Gammelgarn Church

Gammelgarn Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland. The church stands next to a defensive tower probably built to protect the congregation from external attacks.

About this building

The oldest remaining part of the church is the 12th-century tower, although the roof was restored in the 18th century. The rest of the church was completely rebuilt in the 14th century in a Gothic style.

The southern portal of the church is richly adorned with sculptures that reference some scenes from the Old Testament. Of particular note is a medieval tomb inside the church with runes inscribed on its surface.

Ardre Church

The oldest part of the church dates back to 1200. The interior of the church was heavily remodelled in a Neo-Medieval style between 1900–1902 after plans by architect and artist Axel Haig. The furnishings of the church are still largely medieval: an altarpiece from the early 14th century, a triumphal cross and baptismal font, both from the middle of the 13th century.
