Hermitage of São João Baptista
The Ermita de São João Baptista (Ermida de São João Baptista) is a chapel of medieval origin and a clear example of 16th-century Algarve architecture.
About this building
The hermitage was probably built in the 12th century. It became very popular amongst believers towards the end of the 15th century when this type of chapels were common. Although it has been remodelled over the centuries and rebuilt in the 18th century (after the 1755 earthquake) it is still considered one of the main examples of 16th-century architecture in the region of Algarve.
