Igreja de Santa Justa, Coimbra

The Igreja de Santa Justa is an 18th-century church in Coimbra.

About this building

The original Santa Justa Church was on the banks of the Rio Mondego in the 13th century. Due to constant flooding in the 18th century, it was decided to build a new church in honour of the saint on a higher point of the city. The new church was eventually built on Ladeira de Santa Justa street.

The present church was built on the initiative of Bishop D. António de Vasconcelos e Sousa. It has a mannerist façade with large windows and the sculptures of San Francisco, Santa Rufina, Santa Justa and a Bishop. It shows the evolution from the Renaissance to the Baroque style.
