Laon Cathedral

The cathedral is one of the first major Gothic style buildings in France. It is also the heir to an old building, built under the Carolingians and destroyed during the communal uprising of 1112.

About this building

The Carolingian cathedral was consecrated in 800 in the presence of Charlemagne. In the 11th century, Bishop Elinand supported the reconstruction of a new building, inaugurated on December 25, 1071. However, the current building was erected on the initiative of Bishop Gauthier de Mortagne, and its construction was spread from 1155 to around 1235-1238. In addition, 27 chapels were erected in the 14th century, and these modifications took place until the 16th century, then in the following centuries.
