Lau Church
Lau Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.
About this building
The church is larger in size than other country churches on the island. This, along with the fact that it is located in a relatively small parish, makes historians wonder what could have made it so important.
The oldest part of the church is its Romanesque nave, which dates from the first half of the 13th century. The Gothic chancel was built towards the end of the same century. It has four portals decorated with sculptures. It doesn't have a tower, event though the way the church was built suggests that a tower was part of the initial plan.
The interior preserves wall paintings from the first half of the 1500s. Some of the stained glass windows are also original from the medieval period.
Several remains of pre-Christian graves have been found around the church, indicating the presence of a pre-Christian temple on the same site.
