Monestir de Santes Creus
The Cistercian Monastery of the Saint Cross (Monestir de Santes Creus) is one of the largest monastic complexes in Cataluña. Its foundation dates back to the 12th century.
About this building
The monastery's design, influenced by Saint Bernard, emphasizes community needs. Initial buildings reflect order's austerity, later evolving into Gothic splendor. The 14th-century cloister, unique for its Gothic style, exhibits artistic capitals and holds tombs of lineages involved in Mallorca's conquest. In 1921 it was declared a national monument and from then on important restoration and conservation work was carried out. This important monument is now the property of the Generalitat de Catalunya.
