Santa Maria de Vallbona

The origin of this monastery is related to Ramon de Vallbona, a hermit who lived in the 12th century and who gathered around himself several eremitic communities. It is currently an active monastery.

About this building

The development of the Cistercian order encouraged donations to Vallbona and its growth. From its foundation until the 15th century, monastic buildings were built, forming a complex that mixes buildings from very different periods. From the 17th century onwards the monastery began to decline and the consequent loss of property, income and power. In the 19th century there were several exclaustrations, one motivated by the War of Independence (1809 and 1810) and the other in 1835. Monastic life continues today despite some adverse events, such as the Civil War of 1936-39.

Old Cathedral of Lleida

The Old Cathedral of Lleida was built between 1203 and 1278 in the Romanesque style, but its tower and main door are from the 15th century and were therefore built in Gothic. In 1707 the cathedral became a military barracks and a new cathedral was built from 1761 to 1781. After decades of neglect, the cathedral became a prison under Franco during the Spanish Civil War and was restored from the 1950s onwards.
