Church of Santa Maria de Lagos

Constructed in the early 16th century as the 'Church of Mercy', this church was later designated as the parish church following the devastating earthquake of 1755.

About this building

The church has a single nave and a beautiful entrance in the Renaissance style, featuring two Doric columns adorned with sculptures of São Pedro (St Peter) and São Paulo (St Paul). Inside, the most notable decorative elements include a collection of statues in the Rococo style, such as Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption), São Gonçalo de Lagos, Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Carmel), and Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Our Lady of Piety). Additionally, two crucifixion statues also exhibit the Rococo aesthetic.
