Church of Archangel Michael, Episkopi
The Church of Archangel Michael (Michail Archangelos) is an important early Christian basilica situated near the village of Episkopi. It belongs to the Diocese of Kissamos. It is also known as the Rotonda Church or Rotunda Church due to its architectural style.
About this building
The church was built in the 6th century, during the Byzantine period. It has a dome with five concentric rings which is unique on Crete. Some burials from the same century of its construction have been found next to it. The interior has preserved three layers of frescoes from the 7th, 12th and the turn of the 13th to the 14th century, as well as some mosaics.
