Koilani Mosque

The mosque of Koilani is one of the oldest mosques in the Limassol district and is centrally located in the old village centre below the Panagia Eleousa church.

About this building

Parts of the foundation walls are said to date back to the first mosque on this site in 1647. At the end of the 19th century, however, the condition of the mosque was so bad that it could not be used for several decades and the Muslim believers of Koilani had to visit the mosque in neighbouring Silikou. The costs for repairs could not be raised at the time. It was not until 1910 that the mosque was extensively repaired and received its current basic structure. In the mid-1950s, more extensive repair work became necessary.
