Maria Church

This plastered one-aisled church from the twelfth century was originally dedicated to Mary. The entrance portal from 1664 is very special: it is adorned with two lions and a vase from the broken stins Elgersmastate.

About this building

Boer is located on the provincial road from Dongjum to Berlikum and has 19 homes. In Boer is the oldest existing stone house of Frysin, right next to the church. The church and tower are covered with plaster, behind which the brick is hidden. On the south wall the entrance is marked by a gate with pilasters, festoons and a pediment with lions from 1664. This gate comes from Elgersma State building, which was demolished over a hundred years ago. The church received its typical dark red color during the restoration in 2008. In the tower hangs a loud bell from 1561, made by Willem Wegewart of Deventer. In the church of Boer stands a pressure wind harmonium of the French builder Rodolphe, added in 1890. During the restoration of the church in 2008, the harmonium was removed to be restored. It is now in storage with the restorer, in anticipation of the necessary resources. Since the restoration in 2008, the church has been managed by an active Local Commission, which organizes concerts, but also leases the church for (family) meetings. Regularly groups of pilgrims are welcomed who walk the first part of the Jabikspaad between Zwarte Haan and Franeker. In September the church of Boer is part of the art route of Facit, the Franeker association of artists.
