Panagia tou Araka
Panagia tou Araka is one of the painted churches of the Troodos Mountains. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
About this building
The Byzantine church was originally built as a katholikon (monastery church) of the monastery of the same name. It has preserved many medieval murals from the 12th century, painted in late Comnenian style.
As many other painted churches in the Troodos region, it is a single-nave church with a pitched timber roof. The latticed-woodwork portico that surrounds the church was added during the extension of the building in the 18th century.
