About this building
The Church of Saint-Aubin is located in Mesnil-sous-Vienne, in Normandy. The construction of the church probably dates back to the 11th century. The exposed carpentry covering the nave, the two arms of the transept and the choir are homogeneous and of identical structure, suggesting the work of a local craftsman. They certainly date from the rebuilding of the church in the sixteenth century.
The silhouette of the building is very elegant, with the slender spire of its belfry topping a half-timbered square porch. A short three bay vaulted nave is extended by a four-sided choir. The sacristy is attached to the south wall of the choir. A bell tower on stool surmounts the first span of the nave.
The exterior walls, in polychrome checkerboard, alternate between white limestone, red bricks, brown ferruginous sandstone and gray-blue flint. A statue (half-nature) of Saint Catherine of Alexandria dating from the first half of the 16th century is classified as an historic monument.
