Church of Saint Hilarian and Sainte Foy of Perse, Espalion
This Romanesque church was built between the end of the 11th and the beginning of the 12th century. It was placed on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, leading from Puy en Velay to Conques. Its portal is close to that of Conques with large carved decorations. Its pictures illustrate the themes of Pentecost.
About this building
The oriented building was built of stoneware. Two gates are open on the south side. The nave and the choir are separated by a triumphal arch above which has been built a bell-tower with 4 bay windows and where only one bell remains. The apse is a polygonal apse embellished with magnificent sculpted modillions. North side, 2 side chapels were added in the 15th century. Outside, a 13th century fire is located between the western portal and the southern transept.
