Round Church of Preslav
Even partially preserved, the Round Church of is a unique testimony of the First Bulgarian Empire and an exquisite example of early Byzantine architecture.
About this building
Dating back to early medieval times, the Round Church of Preslav it is a precious example of Primitive Byzantine architecture. The church was built probably built in the early 10th century, when Preslav was the capital of the First Bulgarian Empire (7th 11th century AD). Its traces were lost for centuries until an archaeological excavation uncovered its remains in 1927. It is also known as the Church of Gold, as many medieval references allude to the golden colour that its dome used to have.
