Hörsne Church
Hörsne Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.
About this building
The first church standing at this place was a Romanesque building erected in the 12th century. The current chancel, sacristy and tower date from the 13th century and feature a Gothic style. The latest part to be rebuilt was the nave, in the 14th century.
It is likely that the community considered the construction of a new tower of a larger size, in order to avoid the decompensation of size with the 14th century nave. However, the project never materialised and the church was left with its original tower.
The altarpiece of the church is particularly interesting as it consists of Gothic wood sculptures that were later incorporated into a Baroque frame, creating a curious mixture of styles.
