Igreja de São Mamede, Lisbon

Since 1783, Igreja de São Mamede has been the parish seat of São Mamede, a former quarter of the city of Lisbon that occupies the hillside of the Castle of São Jorge.

About this building

An earlier church dedicated to São Mamede stood not far away from the current church, on the slope of São Jorge Castle. The construction of the new church began in 1782 and took a long time. The church was finally inaugurated in 1861.

A fire consumed much of this sacred building in 1921.. During the reconstruction of the church in the following years, the interior was decorated with panels of tiles .
