Norrlanda Church

Norrlanda Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.

About this building

The church was built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style. The tower standing today is the original built in the 13th century. The nave and choir of the original church were rebuilt between the late 13th century and early 14th century. The sculptures that decorate the portals were made by Gotland's stone artist  Egypticus.

The interior of the church preserves many medieval murals, possibly painted by the so-called Passion Master's in the 15th century. The bell that hangs on the tower dates from 1250 and is the largest 13th century church bell in Sweden.

The church underwent some restoration work in the 19th and 20th centuries, but its medieval essence has remained largely unaltered.
