Novo Hopovo Monastery
Novo Hopovo Monastery was an important intellectual centre in Serbia back in the 15th century. It is one of the 16 surviving Orthodox monasteries built between the 15th and 18th centuries on the Fruška Gora mountain in Serbia (also known as the Serbian Mount Athos).
About this building
The monastery is believed to have been founded by the Serbian despot Đurađ Branković. It was an important academic centre for many centuries, dedicated to the literacy of Serbs. Unfortunately, the monastery library and archives were lost in a fire during the Second World War. The monastery church dates from 1576, although it has undergone several restorations throughout its history.
