Sint Gertrudis Church
The Peins church is partly made up of tuff, which indicates that there was already a church in Peins before 1200. The current building dates from the fourteenth century. The church tower was demolished at the beginning of the 20th century due to collapse.
About this building
On an old bank, just north-east of Franeker lies the terp village of Peins, accessible from Franeker via Schalsum and from Dronrijp / Schatzenburg via Schingen. The church of Peins has had an older stone predecessor, which most likely was built before 1200, due to the presence of the tufa stones in the church wall. The church was rebuilt and enlarged around 1300. There are still traces of early gothic windows. The old saddle roof tower can be seen on an engraving of the village Peins from 1791. In the French period the tower, as happened almost everywhere in that time, was confiscated by the municipality to serve as a watchtower. That old tower was demolished in 1902. A west façade was then added with a spire turret with a clock that was manufactured by Jurjen Balthasar in 1654. The church has a small nineteenth-century Van Damorgel, which dates back to 1700 and was then built by Jan Harmens from Berlikum . The Peins church is used extensively. A few times a year there is a church service of the Protestant Church Ried-Skingen et al and every now and then there is a cultural activity.
