Sproge Church

Sproge Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.

About this building

An earlier wooden church was erected on the same site. Some planks of this early 11th-century church are preserved in the Gotland Museum in Visby. On the ground floor of the tower, there are some slabs with runic inscriptions that date back to pre-Christian times.

The church underwent a major transformation between 1839 and 1840 that introduced substantial changes to the interior. Only the 14th-century triumphal cross remains from the medieval period.
