The construction of the church was probably started by the Livonian order in the middle of the 13th century and was completed around 1270. The church was also a fortress, being located far from the centre of Järva County, where the Livonian Order had the Paid Order castle built in 1265. The rose windows in the west wall was one of the first in Estonia.

The stone church was preceded by a wooden church built by the Danes. Originally it was a Gothic-style church with a single nave and no tower. The neo-Gothic tower was not built according to the design of Johann Gottfried Mühlhausen until 1881.
