Burs Church

Burs Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.

About this building

Due to its staged construction, the church in Burs has an unusual shape. The small nave and tower date from the early and mid-13th century respectively. The Gothic choir, disproportionately large compared to the nave, was built in the 14th century, replacing the original Romanesque one.

The choir portal is richly adorned with Gothic sculptures depicting Christ, the apostles and saints.

The altarpiece is a work of art made in northern Germany, probably in Lübeck in the first half of the 15th century.
