St Nikolai's Church

St Nikolai's Church

Halmstad, SE

St Nikolai's Church, formerly also Halmstad Church, dates from the 15th century, as it was first mentioned in 1432. The building escaped the great fire of 1619 and is, therefore, one of the few buildings to have been preserved from before. During the restoration of 1869-1872, the church received its present exterior cladding of yellow facade tiles. Previously it had a red-tiled façade, which was whitewashed around 1815. Today, this older facade is hidden behind the yellow brick. The present interior was added after an extensive restoration in 1938-1941 in order to reinforce the medieval character.
