The Holy Metropolitan Church of the Holy Forerunner, or Agios Ioannis, was built between 1865 and 1867. It is the oldest Christian church in Kavala still in operation. Its creation coincides with the departure of the Christian population from the Panagia Peninsula in 1864, when the Greek Orthodox community-acquired the right to build a quarter outside the walls, its first concern being to build a temple for the religious needs of the faithful. The church was restored in 1890.
