In 1651, the medieval church of Frogner burned down after a thunderbolt. It took a long time to rebuild the new stone church, and it was only in 1692-94 that it was completed. The church has a long rectangular nave and a slightly narrower square choir.

During the 13th century, the present church building in Frösö was built and the two churches were used in parallel until probably the end of the 14th century. The medieval church was rebuilt in the 18th century. The composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger (1867-1942) is buried in the church.
