The Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas was built before 1725 and rebuilt in 1864. In 1868 an iconostasis was made and a vestibule was added. Since then it has been known as the Church of St. Nicholas. After being closed by the communist regime, the church was returned to the faithful in 1989.

According to the inscription above the door of the wooden Church of St. Nicholas, the building was constructed in 1779. This makes it the youngest of the Khust Gothic Maramorosh churches. A wooden bell tower was built near the building. The church is one of the best examples of wooden architecture located around the Tissa river. The building has been restored in 1968.

The Catholic Church of St. Nicholas was already mentioned at the end of the 13th century as a chapel. In 1437, the inhabitants of Buchhorn enlarged the chapel into a Gothic church and erected the tower which is still recognisable today. After the destruction of the monastery in Hofen during the Thirty Years' War, the citizens made St. Nicholas' Church their parish church. In 1689 it was extended and modified. According to the taste of the time, the Gothic vaults had to give way to a flat ceiling. In the 18th century, the church tower was given its present form.

The Church of St. Nicholas is the former Ottoman mosque of Ibrahim Pasha, now an Orthodox church. The mosque was built there in 1530, probably on the site of an old church. The mosque was named after Ibrahim Pasha, vizier of Suleiman II. It was the largest mosque in Kavala. In the 1920s the mosque was transformed into the present church of Agios Nikolaos and above the base of the minaret is now the new bell tower.
