Kapel in 't Zand

Roermond, NL

Semi-detached hall church called chapel in 't Zand. The church was built in 1895-1896 to a design by architect Joh. Kayser in Neo-Gothic style. The clients were the Redemptorist Fathers. The roof turret is a replacement from 1924 for a tower that was lost in 1921 due to storm damage. The chapel is located at the end of the long, straight Kapellerlaan that leads from the city centre to the chapel. The historical buildings on Kapellerlaan and around the chapel are related to the important function of the chapel as a place of pilgrimage. The chapel is a replacement for an earlier chapel, the tradition of which goes back to the 15th century. The procession on the south side of the chapel is a later addition to the chapel. Although this passage is part of the monastery section, its function is strongly connected to the chapel and is therefore included in the description of the chapel. Two corner towers on the west side of the chapel were also lost due to storm damage in 1940 and were not rebuilt.
