Grötlingbo Church

Grötlingbo church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.

About this building

It was built in the 14th century, replacing an earlier church from the previous century. It has largely preserved its Romanesque style. Animals, warriors, and knights on horseback are depicted on the Romanesque frieze on the south façade. The oldest artefacts in the church are the baptismal font from the 12th century and the rood cross from the middle of the 13th century.

It is the burial place of Asger Jorn, a Danish artist known for being one of the founding members of the avant-garde movement COBRA.
