Krušedol Monastery

Krušedol Monastery was founded in the early 16th century by Despot Djordje Branković and his mother Angelina. This is one of the 16 surviving Orthodox monasteries built between the 15th and 18th centuries on the Fruška Gora mountain in Serbia (also known as the Serbian Mount Athos).

About this building

The monastery church was orginally built in the style of the Morava architectural school. At this time, this territory belonged to the Hungarian Empire.  However, it incorporated Baroque elements after the reconstruction of the 18th century to repair the destruction caused by the Ottomans during the Austro-Turkish War of 1716-1718. It has preserved numerous frescoes from the mid 16th century and iconostasis from the 16th century to the 19th century.
