Stichting Folkingestraat Synagoge
An important synagogue, with beautiful interior decoration.
About this building
The interior especially shows the character of this building. The design is partly taken from the Semper synagogue in Dresden. The large round stained-glass window is striking, with its 'Tree of Life' symbolism. In 1943 the synagogue was closed as a house of prayer, and then reopened in 1945 but the building was in poor condition and too big for the Jewish community.
The shul was sold and now functions as dry cleaning and church space for the Apostolic Society, until in 1976 the Folkingestraat Synagogue Foundation was established with the aim of preserving and restoring the building. A large-scale restoration was started in 1979.
A small part of the synagogue is used as a prayer room and the rest of the building has been given a cultural purpose. In addition to services, there are exhibitions, concerts and lectures, often with a Jewish or regional touch.
