Vate Church

Vate Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.

About this building

The site of the present church was already occupied by a church in the 12th century. However no remains of this church have survived. The structure of the present building dates back to the 14th century, with the chancel and the sacristy being the oldest parts. The most recent addition is the wooden spire, which was built at the beginning of the 19th century.

The church preserves mural paintings from the 14th and 16th centuries. Among the relics that can be found inside are the 12th century baptismal font and the 13th century rood cross.

Atlingbo Church

Originated from the 13th century, the church contains a Romanesque baptismal font made by the workshop of Byzantios, a stone sculptor active in Gotland that show influences from Byzantine, hence the notname.
