About this building
The current monastery building dates from 18th century, though the monastery had been founded in the 11th century. The monastery has been almost in ruins several times throughout its history: in the 14th century it was the target of repeated pirate raids, in the 18th century one of its flanks burnt down, and in the 19th century it was need of financial aid. The monastery depended on the support of benefactors for much of its life to continue functioning.
