Santa Maria Assunta Church

A large part of the building of the church of Santa Maria Assunta dates back to the 13th century when it was built on the site of a Marian miracle. According to tradition, a young shepherd discovered a burning flame in front of the image of the Virgin Mary. From 1589 to 1594, Renaissance architectural details were added to the church. From 1852 to 1863, the facade was completed and the dilapidated 14th-century bell tower rebuilt, inspired by the Norman examples of the island.

Patti Cathedral

Patti Cathedral was built in Norman times, and after the earthquake of 1693, it had to be almost completely rebuilt. However, the bell tower of 1588 has been preserved. In the right arm of the transept is the tomb of Countess Adelasia of Sicily (1072-1118), the mother of Roger II of Sicily, who lies in a Renaissance sarcophagus.

Chiesa di Santa Barbara

The church of Santa Barbara is a 16th-century church. In 1576, Saint Barbara was proclaimed patron saint of the town, as the inhabitants of Paternò believed that she had eradicated the plague of that year. The cult of the saint was initially held in the church of Our Lady of Itria of the Teutonic Knights, but in 1583 the University of Paternò acquired an oratory dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, which belonged to the monastery of St. Mary of the Valley of Jehoshaphat, and the cult was transferred there. The current building is probably due to a project of the 18th century, which incorporated on its right side the older oratory, now the parish hall. The church was damaged by the Messina earthquake in 1908 and was later restored.

Cathedral of Acireale

The Cathedral of Acireale was built as a simple parish church in 1597. It was then considerably enlarged to receive the relics of St. Venera, one of the two patron saints of the town. The two bell towers, in Mannerist style, are built centuries apart: the one in the south, like the dome, was built in 1655, and the one in the north, with the rose window, dates back to 1890. The Baroque interior dates from the 17th century. The church has been the seat of the bishopric of Acireale since 1870.
