Tofta Church
Tofta Church is one of the 92 medieval churches on the island of Gotland.
About this building
The present Tofta Church church was built in the 14th century replacing an earlier 12th century church.
The church preserves some remains of its original medieval wall paintings and stained glass windows. Its Romanesque baptismal font is from the 12th century. The altar displays a retable from the 14th century, probably made in Lubeck, Poland.
One of the most important items of the church is a mail coif, probably from the Civil War that was fought on Gotland in 1288. It was found during the cleaning of the tower and has been recognised as one of the most well-preserved mail coifs in Europe.
