St John Church (Agios Ioannis) is a Byzantine chapel on the road linking Trachiniakos to Kantanos. Despite its modest exterior, the interior of the chapel is richly decorated with frescoes from the 14th century.

The manor of Plymtree predates Domesday. The present church of St John the Baptist dates from 14th century and replaced a much earlier structure. The first rector, Johel Walerande, was appointed on 9th April 1261. The arched doorway in the north wall is probably all that remains of his church, but the yew tree in the churchyard has been dated at over 1100 years old and would have been 400 when Johel arrived!

A small monastic establishment is believed to have existed at Alkborough just prior to the Norman Conquest. The church tower is thought to be of Anglo Saxon origin dating back to 1052.

Scampton, St John the Baptist sits on the western edge of the village below RAF Scampton, where the Dambuster raids were flown from and now home to the Red Arrows. There is an RAF chapel in the church with Squadron badges and there are several Commonwealth War Graves in the churchyard.

St John's began life as a Norman church, of which the central tower and west wall, with its typical Norman door, remain. After this, its story is one of continual additions and ‘improvements' over the centuries, which makes the history of the building fascinating although quite difficult to read.
