Cloister of Saints Marcellinus and Festus, Naples

The cloister of Saints Marcellinus and Festus belonged was part of a medieval monastic complex. The cloister serves nowadays as the headquarters Museum of Paleontology of Naples operated by the University of Naples Federico II and some other academic premises.

About this building

The cloister has its origin in the early medieval period. The first references to a monastery of Saints Marcellinus and Peter date from 763. A few decades later, the veneration of Saint Festus also began within the monastery walls.

At the end of the 17th century, the progressive decay of the complex was evident. A renovation took place in the 18th century.
