The discussion about the construction of a new and bigger church started in the 12th century, but it took until 1871 to build a new church. This new building was a brick church in Gothic Revival style and opened in 1875.

The church is on the site of the first church of Porto Santo, built between 1420 and 1446, which was was burnt down by pirates in 1667 and then rebuilt by the local inhabitants. The church has a chancel and a single nave, and includes Rocaille polychrome wooden ceiling. The altars and several paintings are from the renown artists Martim Conrado and Max Römer.
