St. Martin's Basilica (Mondoñedo)

Mondoñedo, ES

The Basilica of San Martín de Mondoñedo, located in the municipality of Foz (Lugo, Galicia, Spain), is considered the oldest cathedral in Spain, since in the 9th century it was the seat of two bishoprics of the kingdom of Galicia: one transferred from Dumio, in the district of Braga (Portugal), and another moved from Bretoña, in the province of Lugo. The current building is Romanesque from the end of the 11th century and the strong buttresses are the work of the 18th century.

St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava

St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava

Bratislava, SK

This is the largest and one of the oldest churches in Bratislava, known especially for being the coronation church of the Kingdom of Hungary between 1563 and 1830. Together with the castle on the hill adjacent, and somewhat similar in its striking, but fairly stark Gothic lines and colouring, St Martin's 85 m (279 ft) spire dominates Old Town's skyline. The tower virtually formed a part of the town's fortifications, built as it was inside the city's defensive walls. As with the castle, the surroundings of St Martin's are as memorable as the structure itself. In the cathedral's case, this includes the picturesque remains of outbuildings in a spacious staired courtyard, and a working seminary with robed adepts on a cobblestone side-street. A small but significant neighbour of the cathedral is a monument to the synagogue, which stood next door for centuries until the Communist government demolished it around 1970 to make room for a new Nový Most bridge. The cathedral contains the remains of Saint John the Merciful who died in the early 7th Century.

St. Martin's Church

St. Martin's Church

Biberach an der Riß, DE

The church of St. Martin was probably founded around 1100 as a Romanesque church and replaced by a Gothic building between 1320 and 1370. At the time of the Reformation, the Simultaneum (a policy allowing public worship by the followers of two or more religious groups in the same church: Simultankirche) was established for St. Martin's Church, and Protestants and Catholics shared the church since 13 August 1548. This was especially true for the nave, the choir remaining purely Roman Catholic. This condition was established by the Peace of Westphalia, which referred to the normal year 1624, and still exists today. According to the land register, the owner of the parish church is the Gemeinschaftliche Kirchenpflege Biberach.
