Torshälla, SE

The Torshälla Church is a medieval church building from the 12th century. It was originally built in a Romanesque style. The building stood on an old heathen sacrificial place. In 1317, the church became too small for the parish. Therefore, the old nave was transformed into a choir and a new nave was build in the west. During the 15th century a tower, porch, and vaulted ceiling were added. In 1614, the tower spire was rebuilt to reach a height of 92 meters. By doing this, the church became a landmark that was used for navigation on the nearby lake Mälaren. At the time, the spire made the church one of the tallest buildings in Sweden. The present lower roof was built after the tower spire and the roof were destroyed by fire, which was caused by lightning.

Tórshavn Cathedral

Tórshavn Cathedral

Tórshavn, FO

Tórshavn Cathedral, founded in 1788, is the second oldest church in the Faroes. It was not until 1609, during the reign of King Christian IV, that a proper church was built on this site. Rasmus Jørgen Winther, a pastor in Tórshavn in 1780, took the initiative to build a new church in 1782. However, it was not completed until 1788 by Johannes Poulsen, the master-builder of Tórshavn. The church of Christian IV was demolished after the consecration of the new church and the wood was sold at auction. Part of the inventory was transferred to the new church. The reconstruction of the church in 1865 changed the exterior of the church but only slightly affected the interior structural form of the church of 1788. On the whole, the structure of the 1865 church has been preserved.
