São Bartolomeu is one of the oldest churches in Terceira. It is known that, in 1486, it was still a location that belonged to the parish of Santa Bárbara. According to tradition, in the year 1500, on the initiative of D. Ignês Alvares and her husband, a small hermitage was built in the place where the current church is located. It is possible that between that year and 1564 the place was elevated to at least a curate, since parish registration services began in 1564.

The primitive temple, then demolished, was rebuilt in 1584 - date inscribed on the doorway - in the primitive streets of Fonte Grande and Direita, today of Machado dos Santos. The temple also evokes Saint Luzia, as it has a chapel dedicated to this saint.

The Convent of Santo António was founded in 1463 under the patronage of Infante D. Fernando, brother of D. Afonso V, and was reconstructed by King D. Manuel I in 1502. The cylindrical buttresses with conical finishes in the Manueline-Mudejar style, which is so prevalent in southern Portugal, are distinguishing characteristics of this church.

The place was poor and repairing it was difficult, as stated by Gaspar Frutuoso. In 1796, the reconstruction of the new temple began, giving it its current appearance.
