Grote- of Martinikerk

Bolsward, NL

The old St. Martin's Church in Bolsward was built around 1100 as a Romanesque tuff church on the Oldehooff. The construction of the Martini Church in Bolsward began in 1450. After that, several construction phases were carried out. This resulted in a three-aisled pseudo-basilica built in Gothic style with a five-sided closed choir. The tower is enclosed by the two side aisles. The masonry of the side aisles consists largely of monastery bricks below the windows and of smaller bricks above. The walls of the choir are made of tuff. The walls are provided with buttresses all around. The last part of the tower, the saddle roof, was installed at the end of the 17th century. Four bells hang in the 52-metre high tower. The oldest was made in 1533. The oldest known main organ was built in 1539. This instrument was sold in 1777 and replaced by a new organ, which was completed in 1781. It was built by Albertus Anthoni Hinsz. Restorations took place in 1953 and 2003. The pulpit, with its beautiful wood carvings, was made in 1662.

Snellius van Royen, 1613. Organ with main work, upper work and free pedal. made in 1840 by the firm Kam and Van der Meulen. The case was made by A. Meere in 1839 and several tombstones from the 15th, 16th and 17th century. In the church wooden frame with disused bells: eleven bells made by G. Both, 1599/1601, four bells by Noorden & De Grave and one bell by C. Fremy.

Grote- of Nicolaaskerk

Muiden, NL

Reformed church, consisting of a Romanesque tufa tower and a pseudo-basilica nave and three-sided closed long choir, both late Gothic. The tufa tower built into the nave aisles, with corner pilasters and round arch friezes and a spire surrounded by battlements, probably dates from the second half of the 12th century and is the remains of a Romanesque church building that was much lower than the current one. Of the original tower entrance, only the round arch is now visible; this entrance was probably closed off at the beginning of the 13th century in connection with a raising of the surrounding terrain that became necessary due to the rising groundwater level. The upper tower section has coupled sound holes; similar, now closed off openings in the section below were probably windows in the past. The nave and choir were built at the beginning of the 15th century; the nave was completely covered with tufa stone from the old church, the choir partly. Window traceries made during the restoration of 1921-'28. This church is listed as a National Monument of the Netherlands.
