Guarda Cathedral was built following the request of Sancho I of Portugal (1185-1211) to Pope Innocent III to transfer the Diocese of Egitânia to the new city of Guarda. The construction of the present cathedral of Guarda dates back to the end of the 14th century, already during the reign of John I of Portugal (1385-1433). Work dragged on and was not completed until the reign of John III of Portugal (1521-1557). It is one of Portugal's late Gothic monuments, with clear evidence of Manueline influence.
