Hoshcha New Jewish Cemetery

Hoshcha New Jewish Cemetery

Hoshcha, RS

The exact period of the cemetery’s establishment is unknown. The oldest preserved tombstone dates to the mid 19th century, so it can be assumed the cemetery was founded around that time. It can first be found marked on a Russian map of the region from 1898 and, later, on maps from the 1930s. The fence was erected by ESJF in 2017.

Hősök Temple in Budapest

Hősök Temple in Budapest

Budapest, HU

The synagogue was built in 1931 near the Dohany Street Synagogue. It was designed by László Vágó, Lajos Deli and Ferenc Faragó in Art Deco style. Its purpose was to commemorate 10,000 Jewish soldiers from the prewar territory of the Kingdom of Hungary, who perished in the battlefields of the First World War. Thus, it stood as a reminder to postwar Hungary, which was turning increasingly anti-Semitic, of the loyalty and patriotism of its Jewish citizens.

House of Prayer of the Old Believers

House of Prayer of the Old Believers

Raja, EE

The house of prayer of the old believers in raja is a reconstruction from 1902 to 1910 of a building dating from 1879. The Old Believers (Orthodox branch) of Raja did not receive permission to build their own shrine until 1879. The building burnt down during the Second World War on 30 August 1944, and unfortunately, all that remains is the bell tower, which was restored in 1990. There is now a museum in the church.

Houtrustkerk

s-Gravenhage, NL

The Houtrust church – designed by architect L. Bok – was built by contractor L. van der Hoek en Zonen on the Verversingskanaal (Discharge Canal) near the former Houtrust estate behind the Westduinen: still a green environment. The church looks like a village church, unpretentious, a meeting place in a garden village environment. The sexton's house is connected to the church by a lower intermediate section. The whole is built of red brick and covered with grey roof tiles. A tower cock – a gift from the main board of the Association – crowns the slender spire of the short tower on the church roof. Above the former main entrance, a beige facade stone can be seen with the Christ monogram, the alpha and omega, ears of corn and bunch of grapes. In the bell house next to the former main entrance hangs a bell, the bell rope of which hangs in the church hall. The bronze bell donated by Miss Bruining was taken away during the German occupation. In 1948, the company Gebr. Van Bergen, tower bell foundry “Concordia” in Midwolda, cast a new bronze bell “Nicolette” with the inscription on the edge: “Hear my voice, I call you all Come to him, who brought peace After bitter battle and fearful night.” The facade stone on the sexton's house shows a hand that passes on the torch of faith. The Klais organ with national and international fame was built in 1937 by the firm Joh. Klais in Bonn according to the electro-pneumatic system, under the advice of Carel Pleijsier. There are 28 speaking registers, divided over three manuals and a pedal.
