About this building

Burials began in the early 19th century. Points of interest include a memorial to the victims of the 1903 Chisinau pogrom (which is near the grave of Rabbi Leib Jehuda Cirilson, who was Chief Rabbi of Bessarabia for several years) and the ruins of the Beit Taara burial synagogue, a mid-19th century building intended for washing the bodies of the deceased before burial.

During the Soviet era, the eastern part of the cemetery was razed to the ground, while a farmers' market was set up in the western part.
