Nicolaas Church

The Nicolaaskerk in Schalsum is particularly special because of the color scheme in the interior. The color scheme of soft pink and soft yellow surprises many visitors. The church is a landmark in Schalsum.

About this building

Schalsum is located northeast of the city of Franeker. The church must date from the 12th century, as the remains of tuff in the walls suggest this period. Later, around 1300, it was changed and in around 1400 the north wall was completely covered with brick. In the south wall you can see a brickwork arched entrance and traces of small, also arched windows. The former clock in the tower, that dates from 1761, no longer exists. After the Second World War it was replaced in 1949 by a clock from the Van Bergen foundry in Midwolda. The organ was built in 1862 by L. van Dam and Sons. Van Dam used a drawer (back work) and a lot of pipework from the Van Gruisen organ he had rebuilt in the Reformed Church in Heerenveen. Only the front pipes, the Violin de Gambe and the wooden pipes of Holpijp 8 'and Prestant 8' are from 1862. The Trumpet 8 'is the Dulciaan 8' by Van Gruisen.
